| Other information | A vendor (for home ownership) is refusing to trade with her, considering her an enemy alien |
Refused as an Asiatic (Hunt to her, 5 May 1915, p.40). Is she an enemy alien? Attorney General is consulted and references the English Court of Appeal case, Porter v Freudenberg, and say this means that Sophie is not an enemy alien ‘as regards civil rights and liabilities’ (signed Mahon, to H R M Pigott, MP, 4 Oct 1915).
Husband Syrian and migrated when 8. Both now technically enemy aliens as territory now Turkey. They own a shop. See Attorney General’s Opinion: Alien Enemy, Whether An Unnaturalised Turkish Subject Resident in Australia is an Alien Enemy’, R R Janan, Secretary, 15/10/15, p.7-10. So, not naturalised but can purchase property.
